National Army Museum - British Civil Wars Virtual Learning Workshop

Part of the National Army Museum’s British Civil Wars: Pikemen, Cavalrymen & Musketeers virtual learning workshop, these two films were designed to bring 17th‑century soldiering vividly into the classroom, especially for remote learners. Originally developed in response to the pandemic, this virtual format remains a popular option for schools preferring a safe and engaging way to interact with museum content.

The first film introduces the wider political and social context of the Civil Wars, using museum objects and archival illustrations to frame themes such as allegiance, tactics, and the evolution of the standing army. The second film dives into the distinct roles of pikemen, musketeers, and cavalrymen—with close‑ups of uniforms, weapons, and handling objects from the museum’s collection to bring the material culture of warfare to life for students.

Squeaky Pedal worked closely with the National Army Museum’s curators to shape scripts that balance historical depth with clarity, while the films’ visual style captures both detail and drama—perfectly aligned with our mission to blend scholarly insight with cinematic storytelling. These films allow pupils to explore gallery content and handling objects—even when they can’t visit in person—and support the museum’s broader educational aim to bring British military history to life with authenticity and impact.

The films have been very well received by both teachers and pupils, praised for their clarity, pace, and engaging presentation—making complex history feel accessible, relevant, and memorable in the classroom.
